CREATING AN EDUCATED, EMPOWERED AND ETHICAL COMMUNITY

Character Education Program Elementary

A two-time National School of Character award recipient, Community of Peace Academy is known for it’s outstanding character education program, based on the values of community, relationships, peacebuilding and restorative practices.

At the elementary, Responsive Classroom is practiced schoolwide, resulting in a strong classroom communities and consistent school-wide practices and language. Academic success is inextricably tied to social-emotional competencies.  To this end, teachers nurture a sense of belonging, significance, and emotional safety so that students feel comfortable taking risks and working with a variety of peers. Through Responsive Classroom we create safe and joyful classrooms and schools where children can thrive.

Peacebuilders, Inc. provides the framework for our restorative practices. The Peacebuilders philosophy is based on five principles:

  • Praise People
  • Give Up Put Downs
  • Seek Wise People
  • Notice and Speak Up about Hurts I Have Caused
  • Right Wrongs, and

Physical activity and play are important, and for this reason our elementary students participate in daily recess, following the Playworks recess model, desinged to promote a positive school culture by leveraging the power of safe, fun, and healthy play at school every day.  Recess is a place for every student on the to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills.

Service learning is a cornerstone of our educational program, and students at all grade levels participate in a service learning project each year.  4th and 5th Grade students also partake in a Kindness Retreat, facilitated by Youth Frontiers.
